I believe that a good solution isn’t necessarily one with many moving parts that each do their job, as much as it is efficient use of the parts on hand to accomplish a goal sustainably.

I like bicycles, so let’s make this about bicycles. I’m also in Florida, so let’s make it about Florida.

There was a time when I was a bus commuter, looking to transition into a bus and bike commuter. The idea was to make transfers more efficiently and to lower the rate of fare where possible.

Well, I found myself looking at a multitude of options, trying to find the best ones.

FUN FACT!

No forum in the history of my time on the internet has ever made me feel secure in any purchase. A dozen people throwing around votes and opinions, and the loudest transient thought in the room wins. Do yourself a favor: use this as a resource, not as a point of authority.

So, I try a few bikes out, try to avoid big box stores. Even get deep down the rabbit hole about which brands, gear ratios, and gear are best.

Again, see the fun fact above, it’s not going to help.

You know what did work?

Giving up on chasing the best option and realizing that the best option, is the option that works for you to accomplish the task.

If you’re on flat terrain, with short distances to ride, and have bike-accommodations in your area, you don’t need a heavy, mountain bike in the event you need to change gears. Often times, you’re better suited to a fixie with a flip-flop hub for a fraction of the price, weight, and complexity.

It’s not giving up or failing to meet expectations. It’s realization that you don’t need to prepare for everything.

Think, as well, when something breaks, will you have the space to give for a fix? When I’d ride a complex bike, a stick might hit my derailleur and break the shifting mechanism. Few things match the tone of a person walking their broken bike home.

With my single-speed, I hit a stick and it might bind the chain or pop it off the cog. No worries! With a few moments of effort, the chain is back on and I’m on my way.

I try to strive for this level of simplicity and transparency in my work and projects.

I want to see all the parts moving, know I can fix it quickly, and rest easy knowing that it’s fairly intuitive for others that might need it as well.
